January

The Institute participates in a seminar on perosnal assistance for university students, organized by the Department of Education, University of Costa Rica, San José, Costa Rica.

Harriet Williams, O.T. travels for the Institute to the Slovak Republic for a 2 weeks mission under the Institute´s Slovakia project. See December of Annual Report 1996.

February

Director Adolf Ratzka travels to Bratislava, Slovak Republic under the Institute´s Slovakia project.

STIL, the Stockholm Cooperative for Independent Living, supports ENIL, the European Network on Independent Living, with a quarterly amount of 25 000 SEK by paying the Institute to take on the function of ENIL´s secretariat on an interim basis until ENIL secures funds from other sources for this purpose.

The Swedish General Inheritance Fund (Allmänna Arvsfonden) decides to support the Institute´s project Personal Assistance Network with 300 000 SEK as part of the project´s national contribution. A national contribution of at least 55% is one fo the conditions for receiving a grant from the European Social Fund under their HORIZON program.

The Personal Assistance Network project is to collect texts on all aspects of personal assistance and to build a virtual online library.

The Swedish National Consumer Board (Konsumentverket) decides to support the Institute´s project proposal "Access Guide" with 150 000 SEK. The Access Guide is a pilot project designed to test the viability of an online access guide which involves a minimum of administration on the part of the Guide´s administrator.

March

The Institute submits its application for the Personal Assistance Network to the EU Program Office in Stockholm.

May

The Institute is invited to by the personal assistance user cooperative JAG to present a paper on the Independent Living Movement at JAG´s annual assembly.

Administrative assistant Paul Petric travels to the Slovak Republic as part of the Institute´s Slovakia Project.

The Institute receives a preliminaruy approval of its application for the Personal Assistance Network project.

August

The Institute hosts a delegation from the United Nations organ ESCAP, Bangkok for deliberations about common concerns.

October

The Institute is awarded a contract by the Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs, Slovak Republic for organizing a two day international workshop on personal assistance and accessible integrated transportation to take place in February 1998.

The Institute hosts a delegation from the Japanese organization Katatsumuri.

November

The Institute finishes its work under the contract with the Slovak Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs for the PHARE project.

The Institute´s director gives a paper on social policy at a seminar hosted by the Swedish journal Socialpolitiken in Gothenburg.

December

The Institute´s director gives a paper on social policy at a seminar hosted by the Swedish journal Socialpolitiken in Stockholm.

The Institute´s application for a grant from the European Social Fund under its HORIZON program is approved. The project sum is a total of 3.2 mil SEK. The project will run for 2.5 years. The European Social Fund contributes 1.5 mil SEK, SAMHALL 150 000 SEK, the General Inheritance Fund 300 000 SEK. Contributions in kind are provided by AMI Vejbystrand and the Institute.

ENIL, the European Network on Independent Living, receives approval from EU Commission DG V for its application for funds for, among other items, its secretariat. Thus, STIL, the Stockholm Cooperative for Independent living, terminates its payment to the Institute in support of ENIL´s secretariat.
